GoldenEye 007, the cult classic first-person shooter game that was released back in 1997 for the Nintendo 64, is back. Not only will you be able to enjoy reliving the single-player campaign, but there will also be Goldeneye split screen multiplayer for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch when it re-releases. It was based on the film of the same name, which came out two years earlier, you play as James Bond as he is tasked with investigating a satellite control station in Russia. As expected, things don't go smoothly, and you have to escape to Monte Carlo.

It was a pleasant, albeit completely unexpected, surprise when the achievements for an Xbox One release of GoldenEye were released in January 2022. However, it wasn't until September that Xbox and Nintendo officially announced that they were rereleasing GoldenEye on their respective consoles.

Releasing on January 27, the game will be available at launch for people who have Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, if you purchased the digital version of Rare's 2015 Xbox One compilation Rare Replay, you will receive the game for free and it will be available on the Switch through the Online Expansion Pass.

There have been a number of changes to both editions before their release this Friday.

The Nintendo Switch will have a widescreen mode and online multiplayer. These will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version, as they are using the original version of the game. There will also be a split-screen mode available for local play.

The Xbox One will have dual analogue stick support, 4K resolution, and a consistent frame rate. There will be no online multiplayer for the Xbox release. However, there will be split-screen support for up to four players locally.

The unique variety of the in-game characters, modes, and weapons means that there are over 200 split-screen game combinations in GoldenEye. It's one of the classic party-game experiences that influenced countless games since it came out.

In fact, when Perfect Dark was released in 2000, it used the same engine, gameplay features, controls, and even cheat options. Later, the team behind GoldenEye 007 would go on to make the iconic TimeSplitters series. These games would also feature a similar HUD design and aiming system.
