Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is preparing to enter its first season of post-launch content.

The fifth chapter of the Black Ops sub-franchise drops players into the height of the Cold War with brand-new campaign, multiplayer, and zombies experiences for players to enjoy.


Since the alpha of Black Ops Cold War, the controversial topic of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) has always been in conversation.

The system said to determine how competitive a multiplayer match is has come under intense scrutiny from casual and competitive players.

With many players seemingly encountering matches with a high level of SBMM, some often wonder what a match in the lower brackets are like.

Low SBMM Lobbies

To demonstrate what goes on in a match with low SBMM, Reddit user CaptivatingRunner has managed to gain access to a Nuketown match where the average K/D ratio of the players was allegedly 0.2, much lower than the average.

The video above shows just how easy the lobby is. The player can literally run rings around the opposition!

Why Is SBMM An Issue?

The issue of SBMM stems from players having to use the strongest weapons in the game in order to have a chance of victory.

By being somewhat forced to use the weapons that are most effective, it prevents players from having the opportunity to experiment with some of the other weapons in the arsenal.


The vast majority of players that have expressed their frustration would prefer public matches to contain a minimal amount of SBMM which would enable players to use a diverse range of weaponry.

From a competitive perspective, a ranked playlist complete with SBMM could easily rectify the issue. A ranked game can utilise SBMM to create matches that contain players of a similar skill, providing the most competitive environment possible.

As the backlash continues, will Treyarch and Activision ever address the issue? We will have to wait and see.
