FIFA 22 has been around for a few weeks now, but whilst the release has been well received by fans of the game, there has been some bizarre activity within Ultimate Team.
The transfer market is unlike anything we've ever seen before, with just four rare gold players trading for over 500,000 coins less than a month on from release.
The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Erling Haaland are trading for under 15,000 coins despite being 88-rated, a price you wouldn't expect to see until the latter stages of the FIFA cycle.
Could the Rulebreakers promotion be exactly what is needed in order to rediscover the values of the higher-rated cards in FIFA 22?
We've seen two major promotions land in FIFA 22 so far this year, namely Ones to Watch and Road to the Knockouts.
Now whilst both of these promotions offer the potential for some incredible cards should they perform well on the real life pitch, neither has offered any overly significant upgrades when compared to the base cards that were already available.
This means that whilst the value of these cards should be astronomical in the early stages of the year, they are actually coming in significantly lower than many had anticipated.
Only three cards in the OTW promotion are trading for in excess of 500,000 coins - Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane - with Timo Werner, Marquinhos, Heung Min Son and Frenkie De Jong the notable inclusions in the Road to the Knockouts promo.
With the market values inexplicably low already, it appears players are sceptical to invest in cards that aren't assured any major upgrades.
Now this is why the Rulebreakers campaign could be more important than any promotion that we have seen in FIFA before.
Should EA follow the format from the FIFA 21 promotion, we can expect to see some unique upgrades, the likes of which we will be unable to access through any other promotion this year, including Team of the Season and Team of the Year.
Take last years promotion for example, we saw a 91-rated Harry Kane handed 91-rated pace, making him a meta striker for the first time in the history of Ultimate Team. For comparison, 96-rated Team of the Season item was only handed 88-rated pace.
This is where EA have to come up trumps, deliver cards that will be worth significant values on the transfer market. Because by doing so, the values of the cards currently available will rise accordingly.
