Fallout 4 PS5: What we know about Bethesda on next gen

PS Plus members already have access to Fallout 4 on PlayStation 5, as part of the PS5-exclusive PS Plus Collection. But will the 2015 RPG also be getting a next-gen upgrade on Sony’s hardware?

Is Fallout 4 getting a PS5 upgrade?

Outside of Doom Eternal and ESO, there’s no word yet which of Bethesda’s existing titles will get new releases for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

Microsoft has said publicly that it wants Bethesda titles to be “first or better or best” on its family of platforms (which includes Game Pass), but that doesn’t quite sound like exclusivity. Fallout 76, for example, will almost certainly hit PS5; it’s more a question of when.

If Bethesda’s new parent company wanted to release an Xbox Series X-optimized version of Fallout 4 and leave PS5 players with just a backward-compatible version from the PS4 edition, that’s certainly within their rights and fits the promises they’ve made thus far.

Still, the game is already five years old, and there’s certainly a chance select Bethesda titles released prior to 2020 could receive PS5-optimized upgrades

Fortunately for Bethesda fans, it sounds like any next-gen upgrades for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles will be free for owners of the games’ last-gen versions.

In an announcement about The Elder Scrolls Online and Doom Eternal coming to PS5 and Series X, the publisher confirmed that players who owned the current versions of the titles would get their next-gen upgrades free of charge upon availability.

“Players who own or purchase either title on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade for free to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions, respectively, when those versions are available,” Bethesda said at the time.

“While we don’t have any news to share just yet on our remaining catalogue of titles, we can confirm we are committed to offer free upgrades for current-generation console owners of existing Bethesda titles we bring forward into the next generation of consoles.”
