With Week 3 of Rocket League in the Gfinity Elite Series Delivered by Domino’s behind us, we’re starting to get an idea of the players to watch in Season 4 as we get closer to finding out who’ll make it to the knock-out stage of the tournament. Here are five of the best performances we picked out from the last weekend.
1. Watch Out For Kassio
This isn’t the first time Kassio has featured in our stats roundup, and if he continues to play as he has, it certainly won’t be the last. The Frenchman is now top scorer with 15 goals and is scoring at a rate of 1.25 goals per game, the second best in the league behind Hashtag United’s eekso.
Kassio has been a crucial addition to Method’s starting roster and has slotted in well alongside the more established duo of Borito B and Rix Ronday to become the focal point of Method attacks. This role has become evident as Kassio is averaging 3.67 shots per game, the second highest average in the Elite Series, and he has also scored 53.57% of all Method’s goals, the fourth-best contribution in Season 4 so far.
His all-around contribution shouldn’t be overlooked either, as he also has five MVP medals, the most of any player in the Season 4 and he sits second on the list of points totals with a score of 21 points. With this in mind, Reason will need to come up with a plan to stifle Kassio if they are to have any chance of claiming a win in Week 5.
2. Epsilon Drinking In The Last Chance Saloon
Despite leading the way with 31 goals, Epsilon find themselves in fourth place in Group B with just three points and only one more game to play. Epsilon have averaged the second most goals per game with 2.4, but despite their excellent attacking play, it has been their play at the other end of the pitch which has caused them issues.
Epsilon have conceded 2.62 goals per game, the second highest in Season 4, and this allied with them conceding 2.08 assists per game suggests that they have found it tricky to stop opponents from getting their build-up play going.
The score differential between Epsilon and their opponents is also particularly telling, with Epsilon having a score differential of -2180, the worst in the Elite Series. This statistic suggests that Epsilon’s opponents have been allowed to play well against them and that despite scoring consistently, they haven’t been able to put together enough meaningful attacks to account for the goals they have been conceding.
The Epsilon boys face a crucial Week 5 fixture as they go head-to-head with high-flyers Hashtag United in a must-win series, and should Nordavind beat Fnatic in their fixture earlier in the day, only a win will keep Epsilon’s hopes of a playoff place alive.
3. Oscillon Finds His Rhythm
Envy’s line-up lost a huge player as last season’s star performer EyeIgnite left for European favourites, We Dem Girlz alongside Rocket League heavyweights Remkoe and Metsanauris. Finding a way to replace EyeIgnite’s 29 goals from Season 3 was always going to be crucial in terms of Envy’s progress in Season 4, but in new recruit Oscillon, they look to have found someone worthy of stepping up to the task.
Oscillon has shown off his full array of skills to great effec, racking up a total score of 5,115, placing him above all other players in Season 4. The Dutchman’s defensive work has been particularly impressive, as he has made a league-best 30 saves at an average of 2.31 saves per game.
His defensive efforts haven’t hindered the attacking side of his game, as Oscillon has also contributed 9 goals and 9 assists. This combined with a creative side to his game which has seen him pull off a few moments of individual brilliance have made him one of the stand-out players of Season 4, and Envy will be more than aware that Oscillon will be crucial to their hopes of going one better than Season 3 and claiming a first Elite Series title in Rocket League.
4. Vitality Need To Find Their Scoring Touch
Last season’s champions Renault Vitality had a tricky start to Season 4, as owing to their absence in Week 1, the hugely experienced roster head into Week 5 with just a single win to their name. While there is no cause for panic as they still have two games to turn their fortunes around, their ineffectiveness in front of goal could be reason for a slight tweak to their tactics.
Vitality’s airtight defence underpinned their success in Season 3, as they conceded just 1.76 goals per game, and their defence has started this season in great form as they have only let in 1.50 goals per game.
However, their attack has left a lot to be desired as they have scored 1.75 goals per game, the joint-second worst in the league. Contrast this with the 2.24 goals per game they scored in Season 3, and it’s clear more work is needed at the sharp end of the pitch if Vitality are to become the first Elite Series champions to retain their title.
5. Al Dente Dishes Up A Great Performance
Al Dente spent Season 3 watching on from the sidelines as Nordavind competed in their first ever Rocket League season in the Elite Series, but the waiting has paid off as he has now established himself as a crucial team player at the heart of the Norwegian side’s attacking verve.
Despite scoring just once in Season 4 so far, Al Dente has been a crucial cog in the Nordavind machine, contributing 7 assists in total, with this amounting to 63.64% of all of Nordavind’s assists, the second-best contribution in the Elite Series.
Al Dente’s measured performances have allowed Data and Godsmilla to flourish, and their comfortable 3-1 series win over Epsilon demonstrated a level of control only assumed by the most competent of players. The fact that they kept the previously high-scoring Epsilon to just five goals across four games is yet more evidence of his invaluable influence on the roster.
