Constantin Film and writer-director Johannes Roberts have announced an all-new live-action Resident Evil film.

Roberts served as director and co-writer on the shark-horror film 47 Meters Down, and also directed the superb slasher flick The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018).

Live-action Resident Evil ‘origin story’ film

Deadline reports that the new movie is “an official origin-story adaptation with faithful ties to Capcom’s classic survival-horror games.”

It takes place in Raccoon City, in 1998.

“With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them,” Roberts said, “whilst, at the same time, telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.”

Longtime Resident Evil producer Robert Kulzer will return to the franchise, along with fellow producers James Harris and Hartley Gorenstein.

“After a dozen games, six live-action movies, and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998,” Kulzer said, “to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City.”
