Destiny 2 Crucible will run at 120 fps on next-gen consoles

Xbox head Phil Spencer was joined by Bungie CEO Pete Parsons during the Xbox Launch Celebration livestream on Tuesday, and the pair had some good news for Destiny’s PvP community.

When Destiny 2’s next-gen optimizations arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game will support 120 frames per second in the Crucible PvP arena.

“For supported platforms, 120hz Crucible requires a 120hz-compatible display,” Bungie writes in a recent blog post. “When enabled, Destiny 2 switches to 120hz, lowers resolution, and lowers some advanced graphics settings upon entering a Crucible match. All other modes remain at 4K/60fps.”

This particular feature excludes the Xbox Series S.

This brings the game roughly in line with the performance of comparable games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which in the previous generation had double the frame rate of Destiny 2 (60 fps versus 30 fps, respectively).

Destiny 2 will run at 60 fps outside of Crucible, however. That’s still double the frames of the Xbox One X, One S, PS4 Pro, and so on.

Anyone who’s played Crucible on an Xbox One or PS4 knows that’s one of Destiny 2’s biggest weaknesses outside of the PC market. With games like Halo 5, Overwatch, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and so on, Destiny was in need of an upgrade.

Destiny 2’s next-gen versions will go live on December 8.
