How to Unlock the Secret Ending in Death’s Door

To unlock the Secret Ending in Death’s Door, players have to first complete the standard ending and beat the final boss. You’ll still be able to explore afterwards, but there’s some very specific steps to take from this point on. To start with, do the following:

  • Go back to the Reaping Commission hub area where you encounter the final boss. There will be a Rusty Belltower Key in the middle of the room where you fought them - grab it.
  • Head to the Lost Cemetery and go to the Belltower at the North-most and highest point. Strike the bell to turn the whole world to night.
  • This will cause numerous changes across the world, including what you need to find the next step: Pieces of the Tablets of Ancient Knowledge.

Tablets of Ancient Knowledge Locations

To get the Secret Ending, you need to find Tablets of Ancient Knowledge, divided into pieces of different colours. These are mostly hard to get and each one is at the end of a special questline, which we’ve laid out the steps for below.

Lost Cemetery Pale Blue Tablet Piece

There is a giant metal door in the South corner of the Lost Cemetery. This won’t open until you find several seven pink ghosts wandering around the Cemetery. Each one has a statue close to it depicting the game’s final boss. Stand near the Ghosts and they’ll start to follow you. Lead them to a statue and they’ll be absorbed into it. Once you’ve lured all seven ghosts to the statues, the big door will open. Go inside to get the first Tablet Piece.

The Old Watchtowers Blue Tablet Piece

There’s now a puzzle door at the Old Watchtowers similar to the one at the Cemetery, in the North-East corner. You can open it by lighting the 6 Braziers in the area with your fire magic. The regular Blue Tablet Piece is inside.

Lost Cemetery Purple Tablet Piece

Staying in the Old Watchtowers, head to the very last stage of the level where you fought the boss and head into the mountainous area above it. You’ll see a secret door with a path leading to an item. Take it to the Lost Cemetery, specifically the Mausoleum near the Gravedigger NPC. Go inside and there’ll be a boss fight. Win it and you’ll get the Purple Tablet Piece.

Overgrown Ruins Yellow Tablet Piece

This one is easier - simply go to the Southernmost point of the Overgrown Ruins to see a large chest in an open stone courtyard that wasn’t there before. The Yellow Tablet Piece is inside.

Stranded Sailor Orange Tablet Piece

Head back to the Stranded Sailor and talk to Jefferson. He’ll ask you to escort him East, by which he means the Flooded Fortress. He’ll then literally be strapped to your back - head to the Flooded Fortress with Jefferson. Keep going South-East along the pier and wooden dock until you find a glowing green platform that wasn’t there before. Carry Jefferson across it and he’ll give you the Orange Tablet Piece.

How to Find the Three Owls and Get the Pink Tablet Piece

The Pink Tablet Piece is one of the most frustrating, as it's actually divided into thirds, requiring you to locate three mystical owls spread across the game. Here’s where to find them:

  • The Old Watchtowers: Head to the Northernmost point along the path made of platforms of ice. The owl is waiting at the end of them.
  • Estate of the Urn Witch: On the stone bridge overlooking the “Garden of Life” in the North-East area, close to the Ceramic Mansion.
  • Overgrown Ruins: On the North area, on a path close to the location of the Mother’s Horn.

Estate of the Urn Witch Green Tablet Piece

This puzzle is a difficult one, broken into two sections. First of all, you need to complete the optional puzzle in the Northwest section of the Estate of the Urn Witch, specifically in the Garden of Love. Check out our guide on the Family Tomb Puzzle Solution to find out how to do that.

Planted Life Seed in Death's Door

You’re not done yet though. Once that's done, this will give you access to Pothead's Gardenwhich will only open if you’ve found and planted every single Life Seed in the game. This means combing through the game for every single Life Seed and Green Pot to plant them in. Best of luck to you.

Where to Take the Tablet Pieces

Finally, once you have all these pieces, head to the Camp of Free Crows to the little shrine at the back-right. A door will open automatically, revealing a new path to the real secret ending. Congratulations!
