Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Named In TIME's 100 Most Influential People of 2021

TIME Magazine has chosen Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2021.

Buterin was included in TIME100’s ‘Innovators’ section alongside the likes of Elon Musk and NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian wrote the TIME100 profile on Buterin, describing him as “a builder’s builder.”

Thanking the r/Ethereum subreddit, Ohanian noted he has followed Buterin from early in Ethereum’s development.

While Ohanian pointed to Ethereum’s market cap, his praise for Buterin stemmed from his role in pioneering the DeFi space.

“No one person could’ve possibly come up with all of the uses for Ethereum,” Ohanian said. “But it did take one person’s idea to get it started.”

In highlighting the likes of Sorare and other NFT-based projects, Ohanian said: “None of this would’ve existed without Vitalik’s creation.”

“I’ve never been more excited about the potential of the Internet, and that’s largely thanks to Vitalik Buterin.”

Buterin has yet to give a statement regarding his inclusion on the list.

In a tweet, Trust Wallet congratulated Buterin, while also suggesting bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto would also make the list, if anybody knew who he was.

TIME also selected President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador – which became the first country to make bitcoin a legal tender. However, his selection was justified by his government’s strict authoritarian regime, in which Daniel Lizárraga - a journalist expelled by his Bukele's regime - describes him as having “brooked no criticism or opposition.”

In April 2021, TIME Magazine named Coinbase and the Digital Currency Group in its 100 Most Influential Companies. Alongside these cryptocurrency companies, the list included several other companies that have embraced cryptocurrency, such as Robinhood and PayPal.
