PlayStation 5 Will Not Play PS3 Games Or Earlier, According To Deleted Post

PlayStation 5 will not offer backwards compatibility for PS3, PS2 or PS1 games, according to a since-deleted line in a Ubisoft next-gen support page.

Over the weekend, the page had read: "Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games."

PS5 Will Not Offer PS3, PS2 Or PS1 Backwards Compatibility

This line has been removed from the page, potentially due to pressure from Sony, or because the information doesn't apply to Ubisoft games but other publishers are investigating.

Previous patents had suggested that the PlayStation 5 would look to offer some kind of emulation for "legacy consoles", while Sony confirmed at their March reveal of the console's specs that the PS5 will support selected PS4 titles, but not all.

This is in stark contrast to the Xbox Series X which is slated to run Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, many with graphical enhancements achieved through the console's increased horsepower.
