COD 2020: Warzone Will 'Evolve' And Be 'Tied' To Other Call Of Duty Games

Infinity Ward's Design Director, Geoff Smith, has sat down with GamesRadar to talk about the future of the popular mode.

Warzone is set to enter its fifth season on the 5th August and has risen to the top of the Battle Royale food chain.

But what happens to this popular free-to-play game once the current Call of Duty's time has passed? According to Infinity Ward, it was 'built to be a standalone game' and will 'evolve'.

Warzone Will Evolve With COD 2020

Geoff Smith has reiterated that Warzone is its own game despite being ‘tied’ to other Call of Duty games as they release in the future - meaning it can change as new games are released.

“Although Warzone is very closely tied to Modern Warfare, it was designed from the beginning as its own game,” says Smith. “As the game continues to be updated over time, it will evolve and become tied to other games in the Call of Duty universe.”

In the past, Activision has simply stated that the game will be connected to Call of Duty universe and this is the first time they have publicly stated that the game will be tied to the universe and evolve with it.

While its still unclear how that will happen, speculation has risen that a new map with unique locations will arrive with the introduction of Black Ops Cold War - the rumoured name for COD 2020.

“It’s extremely important to us that the game continues to evolve,” Smith explains. “From the beginning, we’ve strived to continuously bring new and different ways for fans to play and continue having fun in both Modern Warfare and Warzone.”
