To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Atelier JRPG series from GUST, Atelier Online: Alchemist of Bressisle has finally launched outside of Asia, bringing the free-to-play online alchemy RPG to the West.
Handled by Boltrend Games, developer of other mobile JPRG titles like Idola Phantasy Star Saga, today's Atelier Online Android and iOS release date brings familiar characters together for the first time and introduces even more heroes with a knack for alchemy.
Though you'll take control of your own brand-new male or female protagonist at the start of the game, Atelier Online will offer plenty of opportunities to befriend and recruit characters from past entries in the series; from Rorona and Totori to Ayesha and even Marie, the protagonist from the very first Atelier game released back in 1997.
There's more to it than simply dragging more familiar faces into your team, however. You'll set out to explore Bressisle Island, getting into fights with enemies like Red Caps and synthesizing gathered ingredients to pull new armour and equipment out of a cauldron.
You can even take classes at school to become a better alchemist, presumably increasing the types of items you can piece together.
Like any good RPG, the loot you fight for will allow you to explore deeper into the world and defeat progressively stronger enemies along the way. And if you're having trouble, co-op mode (a first for the Atelier series) will allow you to team up with friends new and old to share the rewards.
Atelier Online was originally due to land in Japan to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the franchise. After an unfortunate delay, it actually released a year later than planned in 2018. In the West, the Atelier series only officially arrived in 2005 with the release of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana.
