Cyberpunk 2077: Warning For Players With Epilepsy

PSA For Samurai in Night City

Cyberpunk 2077 is only two days away at the time of writing, and we like so many others just cannot wait for it to release.

Though, for some fans, the hype train may have just ground to a halt.

Early review copies have been released and the first details are in the wild, the good and the bad.

One more negative detail is that people with epilepsy or others who are prone to seizures due to bright, flashing lights may want to stick this one out.

Here’s everything we know about the risks Cyberpunk 2077 could pose.

Potential Epilepsy Triggers In Cyberpunk 2077

One early reviewer of Cyberpunk 2077 was Lianna Ruppert from Gameinformer.

Lianna is someone who suffers with epilepsy and she details a few potential triggers which could crop up in Cyberpunk 2077.

This was to be expected for a game based on a world of neon technology and opulent excess, though it is disappointing that accommodations haven’t been made for epilepsy sufferers.

Obviously, everyone’s triggers will be a bit different, but here are some of her findings.

The general overworld shouldn’t cause too many problems but be warned when entering bars and clubs. Lianna highlights them as “danger zones”.

And for everyone hoping to meet Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand, you’ll have to be careful of him too. Johnny SIlverhand will be highlighted with a flickering blue glitch effect at later points in the story which can be a trigger.

Finally, the worst offender is by far the Braindance headset.

Braindance has been shown off as a feature which allows players to experience other character’s memories. According to Lianna the device which is used to put V into a BD is a headset which flashes red and white LEDs very quickly, in an almost identical way to medical devices neurologists use to trigger seizures for diagnostic reasons in real life.

Even once inside BDs have glitch animations which could cause more issues, so make sure to be safe. And to make matters worse BDs are necessary to finish the story.

At this time CDPR has yet to respond to these reports, though we wouldn’t be surprised if a patch attempted to solve these issues later down the line.

For now, just make sure to exercise caution.

Perhaps this will be a game to miss out on, but we understand if you are too excited to do that. Instead, make sure you have friends or family nearby at all times when playing Cyberpunk 2077, and exercise caution if you believe a trigger is coming up.
