With the new Cayo Perico heist update on the way in December, it’s a perfect time to dust off GTA 5 and jump back into Rockstar’s chaotic SoCal playground. And if you’ve never done the heist missions before, the Fleeca Job — a small two-person bank robbery — is the perfect mission to play through a few times till you get the hang of things.
There are a couple minigames involved, one of which is drilling into a safe-deposit box during the finale. You’ll want to take a “slow and steady” approach to this in order to avoid having the drill overheat.
Drilling in GTA Online heists
To drill during heist missions like the Fleeca Job (with a controller), “Hold R2 all the way down and just put a tiny amount of pressure on the left stick — just enough for the drill to make contact,” one YouTube video explains. “You want to see sparks coming off the drill, but if the drill in the guide starts to turn red, release.”
Each time you get through one of the lock’s pins, you’ll suddenly have no pressure on the drill, so feel free to push the left stick forward and make contact with the next pin. You want to watch the drill tip to make sure you’re progressing forward, pushing neither too softly nor too hard.
A near-perfect drilling job will take 30 seconds or less.

The Cayo Perico heist
“On Tuesday, December 15, GTA Online raises the stakes once again with its biggest update yet: the Cayo Perico Heist, featuring an all-new exotic location and a brand-new approach to heist design that for the first time will let players tackle the entire heist solo or with a crew of up to three other players,” Rockstar said in an email.
“Along with the challenge of finding a way to infiltrate and rob one of the most secure private islands in the world, players can also expect new social spaces to party with friends, new world-class DJs, and radio stations with over 100 new songs, plus a host of vehicles and weapons, a heavily armed submarine HQ, and much more.”
A standalone release of GTA Online is expected to launch in 2021, along with new versions of GTA 5 optimized for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
