How to get power armor in Fallout 76

You don’t want to go without it for long

If you’re venturing out into the wasteland beyond Vault 76, you probably won’t last long in a serious fight unless you’ve got some power armor.

Power armor is a large, vehicle-like suit that the player can step into — a kind of powered exoskeleton that makes you harder to kill, better protected against harsh elements in the environment (like radiation), and so on. It’s even more essential in Fallout 76 than previous installments in the series.

So how do you get your own suit of power armor? Power-armor frames can be found throughout the open world.

Sometimes, they’ll have two or three armor pieces outfitted on them already, but you can find the individual torso plates, arms, legs, helmet and so forth elsewhere. Collecting a full set of T-45, T-51, T-60, X-01, or specialized armor can be a fun goal to work toward while you knock out quests.

To enter power armor you find in the open world, use the action button (X on PlayStation, A on Xbox, etc.) to climb into the exosuit and claim it as your own. Once you’ve done this, it’s yours.

According to the original Fallout 76 strategy guide, you can relinquish ownership of power armor by “dropping it” from your inventory.

If you’re wandering the wasteland at your own pace, the main thing to keep in mind is that you’re looking for barns, sheds, greenhouses, warehouses, and other small industrial buildings.

Power armor takes up about 10 pounds of weight in your inventory, but adds carrying capacity when you’re actually wearing it.

Crucially, it requires a single “fusion core” battery to power it. These are rare and expensive items found throughout the game world, and you’ll want to limit your time spent wearing the armor to when you’ve either got a lot of fusion cores or need the armor for a tough fight.
