Destiny 2's Witch Queen Expansion Will Not Revive Earlier Locations

So no Dreadnaught after all?

Beyond Light is here, but attention has already turned to the next expansion, The Witch Queen.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Game Director Luke Smith has been discussing the way the game will cycle content after four destinations were removed.

Beyond Light, for example, has "unvaulted" the original game's Cosmodrome, leading many to speculate that each subsequent expansion will re-introduce an area as well as adding a new one.

"Each expansion is going to include a brand-new destination," Smith explained, "so The Witch Queen is not going to unvault one."

It's not as simple as copying and pasting destinations, with Smith explaining that "for a destination to be unvaulted, it has to be updated to the latest context for the universe, so even with Cosmodrome, we updated a bunch of it to the latest context."

Smith also notes that bringing back Strikes, a more replayable element, is largely a different prospect.

"The destinations are part of the ongoing narrative of Destiny and Strikes are more of a gamey-game element, if you will. Bringing back a really popular Destiny 1 Strike is about putting an awesome, fun replayable thing back in the game. Bringing back a destination is about looking at its context in the Destiny 2 storylines."

With that in mind, could we eventually see more Strikes re-added to the game?

Time will tell, of course, but we do know that The Vault of Glass is set to return in the coming months, so it's possible that Bungie can re-enable content on an a la carte basis going forward.

We've also seen small snippets of areas added in the past, like a snowy version of the Cosmodrome, so there's always the potential for revisiting locations without needing to add them in their entirety.
