Could Sony splash the cash?

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has noted that more studio acquisitions "might be possible".

The publisher currently has 14 studios and in an interview with Reuters, Ryan noted that "where we can bolster our in-house capability with selective M&A that might be possible.”

Sony Open To Acquiring More Development Studios

Last month, Microsoft stunned the industry by agreeing a deal to purchase ZeniMax Media, including publisher Bethesda Softworks for $7.5 billion in cash to add to its own first-party studio lineup.

Sony's most recent acquisition was Marvel's Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games, which was purchased in 2019.

The company has stressed the importance of exclusive titles to the PlayStation brand.

Sony has also suggested an accelerated release schedule of exclusive games, something which could potentially see more standalone, shorter adventures like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Uncharted: Lost Legacy.
