Whisper Destiny 2 quest: How to get the exotic sniper rifle

Time to get Whisper of the Worm.

This hard-to-get sniper was inspired by the Black Spindle, one of the indispensable exotics from Destiny 1’s endgame. It’s a standard choice for seasoned Guardians taking on high-level bosses.

“It focuses on sustained boss DPS without reloading, heavily competing with D.A.R.C.I. and Sleeper Simulant,” Destinypedia says.

“The catalyst obtained by running the Heroic version of ‘The Whisper’ grants Whispered Breathing, which, after aiming down sights for three seconds, will increase precision damage and range until de-scoped.”

The following exotic quests will be changed when Beyond Light launches on November 10: Sturm, MIDA Multi-Tool, Rat King, Legend of Acrius, Sleeper Simulant, Polaris Lance, Worldline Zero, Ace of Spades, the Last Word, Le Monarque, Jotunn, Izanagi’s Burden, Thorn, Lumina, Truth, Bad Juju.

“None of these legacy exotics are being retired from Destiny 2,” Bungie clarified in an August 2020 blog post. “Their original acquisition journeys are simply entering the DCV alongside their supporting destination and activity content.”

For now, here’s how to get the Whisper.

Whisper of the Worm quest

This mission is timed; you’ll have to complete “The Whisper” in 20 minutes or less, so try not to dilly-dally. And you probably want to assemble a fireteam of three experienced players before you take this one on.

Best-case scenario, you might want a guide who’s already completed the mission to lead you and a friend through it. If you’ve got a good sniper rifle or the Sleeper Simulant, those are good options for your loadout, as most engagements will be at long range once you’re in the mission area.

Head to Io’s Lost Oasis, wait for a “Taken Blight” public event to begin, and start searching for a named Taken boss (something like “Drevis, Aspect of Darkness”).

Search for a Taken portal nearby. Enter it to begin “The Whisper.”

‘The Whisper’ exotic mission on Io

The clock starts ticking now. You’ve got 20 minutes. Race through the Lost Sector until you reach a Taken blight blocking your path. Destroy it, descend down into the hole, and keep going.

If you’re in some tight passageways, you’re probably on the right track. You’ll know for certain you’re in the right place when you see the Vex architecture and red lighting.

If you get lost, consult the above video for visual aids.

Follow the narrow ledge until there’s nowhere left to go, then drop down onto the similar, red-lit ledge below.

Make sure you’ve got your best, most precise jump ability equipped, as though you were doing a jumping puzzle in a raid. That’s basically what we’re dealing with here.

‘The Whisper’ jumping puzzles

Follow the colorful visual cues in the lighting, basically, and watch for traps that shoot out of some of the walls. Death will obviously slow you down and make failure more likely, given the time limit.

Time your moves, watch for motion ahead of you to spot the various obstacles, and have patience when you’re learning the jumping puzzle.

Narrow ledges illuminated in red are what you’re looking for most of the time, but watch out for Taken anomalies and Vex contraptions that’ll knock you into the abyss below.

When you reach the large room with a series of Taken portals in it, you’re going to head for the one in the far-right corner of the chamber. Ignore the others.

When you reach the next phase of the mission — a bluish stone area with patches of moss here and there — begin ascending the walls.

Aim for any sliver of footing (often green with moss), make your way clockwise around the chamber, and keep ascending. This is very tricky stuff.

When you can’t go any higher, drop down into the narrow passage just off to your right, fall a little ways, and drop into the darkness.

You should land on some fallen Vex Goblins.

When you reach the next vast area, take the rounded, blue-lit ledge to your left — watching your step — until you reach the broken bit of Vex latticework.

Look down below for a sliver of bright light.

Carefully, jump down there. Follow the white light. Watch your step as you make your way through this part of the puzzle; don’t get sloppy.

‘The Whisper’ boss fight

When you reach the end of all this, you’ll find yourself in the crust of Io once again — this time in a room filled with Taken blights and fairly tough enemies. Hopefully, you’ll have saved all your supers.

Focus your efforts — and use your heavy ammo — on the more powerful enemies. When you reach a glowing triangular opening in the floor, drop down.

This is the final phase of “The Whisper.”

First thing: start taking out the Taken blights. Manage the lower-level enemies, but don’t prioritize them. Once the three bosses spawn, taking them down becomes your main objective.

When those three bosses fall, the Whisper’s all yours.
