The smash-hit Sonic the Hedgehog movie is getting a sequel.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 confirmed
Back in May, Sega and Paramount announced that a second Sonic film is in development, with director Jeff Fowler returning. Writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are handling the script.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog film made $308.4 million at the worldwide box office, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2020, as of October.
On release, it scored the all-time number-one opening weekend for a movie based on a video-game property.
“We just tried to find some things to do with the character that were relatable for a lot of people and not make it sort of fan service, and to try to create a relatable character that was grounded… Hopefully, that’s what we created, and that’s what people responded to,” Fowler told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
“We love stories about heroes, and Sonic is out there fighting for the little guys. Sonic is rescuing all the little animals from the tyranny of this maniacal Dr. Robotnik. I don’t think that anybody gets tired of being told a good hero story.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cast
In July, actor Ben Schwartz confirmed that he’d reprise the role of Sonic with a Twitter post. Schwartz attached a video clip of himself making his way through an airport terminal, apparently, with a large wall-sized Sonic ad in the background.
“Sonic 2 is officially coming to theaters April 8, 2022,” he said, in all caps. Can’t blame the guy for being excited.
The original film co-starred James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey.
