PS4 Is Not Recording Your Voice Chat, But PS5 Might

But not for the reasons you might think.

PlayStation 5 is about a month away, but PS4 owners have been left bemused by a new pop-up appearing since updating their console's to firmware 8.00.

Despite suggesting that your party chat is going to be recorded, Sony has confirmed that this is not the case, and is instead referring to an upcoming PlayStation 5 feature.

No, Sony Isn't Recording Your PS4 Voice Chat

It sounds as though PS5 users will eventually be able to record voice communications with potentially toxic players and send to Sony.

Sony will have some kind of moderation team that can then take action, in theory.

Here's what they've said, as part of an update to the firmware 8.00 notes:

"Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review."

"The pop up you're seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE."

Presumably, this is due to PS5 offering a built-in microphone in the Dualsense controller.

It could be a big week for PS5 news, as Sony partners with Burger King of all places to reveal the console's UI. Find out more here.

We've also heard that the PS5 will run all of PS4's games, except for a minuscule list.
