Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Will Support 4K HDR

Lookin’ good, Morales.

Insomniac showed off another glimpse of the visuals from its upcoming Miles Morales sequel in a tweet on Saturday.

Spidey in 4K with HDR and Ray Tracing

A new GIF’d shot shows the titular hero from the back, unmasked, as he makes his way along a New York sidewalk.

He’s got a winter coat on; snow falls in spirals all around him.

His breath clouds the nighttime air.

“[Miles Morales] is realized in 4K HDR on PS5,” Insomniac writes in the tweet. “See reflections with ray tracing, and improved lighting, shadow, and character detail.”

“[We’re excited for the game to demonstrate the power of PlayStation 5 this holiday,” Insomniac’s Brian Horton said back in June.

“Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.”

Performance Mode

The game looks fantastic by any modern standard, but there is a point of compromise that’s already causing arguments among enthusiasts.

With all the graphical enhancements the PS5 has to offer, Spider-Man: Morales runs at 30 frames per second by default.

For some players, 30 fps simply isn’t next-gen enough.

Granted, this is a single-player game, and Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) ran at a steady 30 fps on both PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro — which didn’t hurt that game in the slightest.

But if players want to turn down some of the visual flare in exchange for double the frame rate, well, the PS5 sequel will let you do that with an optional “performance mode.”

“Swing through the city like never before on PS5 with an optional 4K / 60-fps Performance Mode,” Insomniac tweeted back in July.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales launches later this year alongside the PS5.
