Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Black Shuck, Daughters of Lerion

What does the new Assassin’s Creed have in common with Led Zeppelin, Sherlock Holmes, and Shakespeare? Couple things, actually.

GamesRadar held a special Future Games Show broadcast as part of Gamescom 2020 on Friday, and Ubisoft’s next Assassin’s Creed made an appearance.

During the stream, narrative director Darby McDevitt offered some insights into the mythical beasts and other enemies you’ll encounter in the game. McDevitt’s commentary was accompanied by some all-new gameplay footage.

Valhalla’s Black Shuck

The first big reveal of the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla segment was the Black Shuck of English folklore — a kind of miniboss players will encounter out in the world.

The Black Shuck (or simply “black dog”) of English legend is a familiar image in literature, music, and pop culture. One of Led Zeppelin’s big radio hits was called “Black Dog,” and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote an entire Sherlock Holmes novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, inspired by the tale.

It’s a large, gnarly canine, and it looks like it’ll put up a fight. The Shuck of English folklore is associated with nighttime and thunderstorms, and is considered an embodiment of the devil.

The Daughters of Lerion

The game also pays homage to Shakespeare’s King Lear, of all things.

In ancient British history, there was a king called Lerion, or Leir, who ruled around the dawn of the Roman Empire. Valhalla will pit players against Lerion’s three very angry daughters, who are out to restore honor to their father’s name.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set to launch on November 17 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and PC. It’s also coming to the Series X and PS5.
