Existing players will get plenty of freebies, as well as cross-progression.

Rocket League is going free-to-play this Summer, developers Psyonix have confirmed.

The game has grown in popularity since its launch in 2015, and it seems this move will only increase the game's popularity.

Psyonix Makes Rocket League Free To Play

The official Rocket League Twitter account released the following:

The free-to-play update is touted as the game's "biggest one yet" and will include changes to Tournaments and Challenges, as well as cross-platform progression for item inventory, Rocket Pass progress, and competitive rank.

The game will also rocket to another platform (sorry), as the PC version moves over to the Epic Games Store. Anyone that already owns the game on Steam will still be able to play there, but Valve's platform will not offer a version for new players.

Players that have already purchased the game can enjoy "Legacy status". This offers the following perks:

  • All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
  • "Est. 20XX" title that displays the year when the player first started playing Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to "Legacy" quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner

If you've played Rocket League before today, you'll also earn the Faded Cosmos Boost when the game goes free-to-play.

Psyonix has promised plenty of updates in the coming weeks, but you can find out more on the developer's blog post here (which curiously, is dated for next week).
