Cyberpunk 2077 Demo: Gameplay, Weapons, Combat Mechanics And What We Learned From It

Past trailers and gameplay leaks have revealed quite a lot about the features coming to CD Projekt Red’s upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077.

Initially featured at E3 2018, the 48-minute gameplay demo built a lot of hype for the game the time.

However, this has worn off since as the game was recently delayed from April to 17 September 2020.

That said, there are still plenty of gamers out there who haven't seen the footage, and will want to hear about some of the features coming to the dystopian RPG.

Abilities And Weapons

Although some scenes and driving scenarios switch to third-person view, Cyberpunk 2077 involves an awful lot of first-person shooting.

It’s chaotic, fast-paced and exhilarating nature was shown off in the opening moments of the demo, where the main character V peeks from behind cover and showers a gang of organ scavengers with bullets from his machine pistol.

Each gunshot carries a numbered indicator, showing the player the amount of damage that has been dealt (like in Bungie’s first-person shooter Destiny 2).

There’s quite a bit of speculation over what abilities V has, as he was very swift and agile in the 2018 gameplay demo.

V had the ability to run and slide to cover whilst triggering a slow-motion ‘bullet-time’ mode.

 

Combat Mechanics

We saw a ton of cool weapons - a modified ‘tech shotgun‘ was used to penetrate enemy cover in the demo, and we've heard that it can be used in combination with V’s upgraded optic implant.

Alternatively, a ‘smart rifle‘ will lock onto multiple enemies and fire bullets that track their intended targets.

However, we were let down by the shooting mechanics on show in the 48-minute gameplay demo.

The whole experience of shooting a gun just looked… well, flat.

The teaser featured V tearing a massive machine-gun free from a turret, but when it came to the shooting, there was no sense of the machine gun’s power. V’s mobility was not impacted in the slightest and there was no sense of recoil when firing.

All of that said, the game must have come a long way since 2018, and the finishing touches are likely being added as we speak.
