The Grau 5.56 is one of two brand-new weapons that will be arriving as part of the launch of season 2 in Modern Warfare.
The weapon becomes the latest addition to the Assault Rifle weapon category, a weapon class that already features some very strong weaponry in the forms of the M4A1, Kilo 141 and the M13. This new weapon certainly holds its own as one of the strongest weapons in the game for Season 3.
In this article, we take a look at what we can expect from the weapon and where it could slot into the metagame of Modern Warfare.
Adding a barrel to increase its damage output at the longer range will be a necessity in order to make it viable in most scenarios.
Alongside a barrel, equipping some form of foregrip and grip tape to ensure that the recoil levels remain at a minimum will be important to master this weapon and extract the maximum levels of performance from it.
After some time testing out many different attachment combinations, we have found three classes that will suit all styles of play.
1) The Perfect All-Rounder
The first GRAU class is perfect for most scenarios that you will encounter during a game.

This set of attachments is perfect for any situation, providing a strong damage output, minimal levels of recoil and a crisp optic to keep your target in focus regardless of range.
- Scavenger (Perk 1)
- High Alert (Perk 2)
- Shrapnel (Perk 3)
The small magazine means equipping scavenger is a sure-fire way of not running out of bullets on the battlefield. High alert allows you to further increase your awareness on who has spotted you and shrapnel allows you to spawn in with an extra piece of lethal equipment, ideal for clearing out buildings with grenades or defending them with some crafty claymores.
- Proximity Mine (Lethal)
- Gas Grenade (Tactical)
Proxy mines can be well-hidden, giving the enemy a nasty surprise when they come into contact with one while the gas grenade disorientates and gradually deals damage to an enemy, making them a sitting duck for you and your teammates to dispatch of.
- Deployable Cover
Perfect for blocking a doorway or providing some cover in an open area, deployable cover can be used when defending objectives or as a last line of defence before the enemy advances on your position.
- Counter UAV (4 Kills)
- Sentry Gun (7 Kills)
- VTOL Jet (8 Kills)
This particular streak combination is great for confusing the enemy and providing plenty of cover across various areas of the map.
2) Unmatched Aggression
This class is designed for aggressive Assault Rifle (AR) players to deal some serious damage whilst getting heavily involved in the pandemonium.

The choice of barrel is the key for dealing the most amount of damage. Selecting the nexus increases the damage output considerably and hardly takes away any mobility, making this iteration of the GRAU deadly in amongst the action.

- Battle Hardened (Perk 3)
Both EOD and battle hardened provide increased resistance to lethal and tactical equipment which is a must when entering action-packed areas of the map filled with players. Hardline is also perfect for this class as it means killstreaks take one less kill to earn, meaning you can score them quickly without having to alter an aggressive style of play.
- Semtex (Lethal)
- Smoke Grenade (Tactical)
The Semtex is great for clearing out a congested objective. Throw the smoke beforehand and see the opposition-run for cover as they try to avoid the Semtex and escape the dense smoke that has descended upon them.
- Trophy System
When playing the objective, place the trophy system down as an additional form of cover to block any form of incoming grenades that will try to force you to change position or abandon control of the objective altogether.

The party piece of this streak combination is the IAV which can be used on some of the bigger maps in Modern Warfare. Take control of a huge tank and decimate the enemy!
3) Small but Mighty
The third and final class may look like an underpowered sub-machine gun but in fact, this version of the GRAU packs a lethal punch in close-quarters, making it perfect for all out rushing.

This set of attachments converts the GRAU into a compact and mobile AR that can easily content with some of the stronger SMGs in the game. It’s most effective when getting involved in all the action so for the best results, get stuck in!
- Double Time (Perk 1)
- Pointman (Perk 2)
- Tracker (Perk 3)
Double time allows your tactical sprint to recharge faster and doubles its length, allowing you to navigate the map quickly. Pointman converts killstreaks into scorestreaks, perfect for playing the objective and tracker enables you to see where the enemy has been with bright red footsteps lighting up the way to an easy kill.
- Frag Grenade (Lethal)
- Stun Grenade (Tactical)
Use the stun grenade to slow the enemy down, making them an easy target and use the frag grenade to either launch across the map in the hopes of scoring a crazy hail Mary kill or cook it and bounce it into a crowded damage for a massive impact.
- Stopping Power Rounds
Further increase the lethality of the GRAU with some stopping power rounds to make it even more deadly at close range.
- Cluster Strike (5 Kills)
- VTOL Jet (8 Kills)
- Advanced UAV (12 Kills)
The cluster strike and VTOL can easily secure a hefty number of kills while the advanced UAV provides some support for your teammates, revealing the location and real-time movements of the opposition.
