The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is now in development and here's everything we know about it so far.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is gearing up to be the biggest release in quite some time for Nintendo.

The announcement about its development came during Nintendo's E3 2019 conference, albeit it was only a few seconds of the game.

Although we have heard nothing from Nintendo since players are still optimistic. Sequels have been a massive hit with gamers as of late (similarly with how Insomniac Games are building Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

The original Breath of The Wild was set in Hyrule and players are hoping to head back to this famous location.

Nintendo has no planned releases for the rest of 2020, so this could mean we hear news soon regarding Breath of the Wild 2,

With the fast-approaching release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, Nintendo will have to go all out this year to stay in the game.

So what do we know about this brilliant return for Link and his companions?

Voice Acting Finished? - 12th July

During the week, the voice acting for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 was reportedly "finished".

As reported by Gamereactor, voice actors Marc Navarro and Nerea Alfonso (Spanish dubs for Revali and Zelda, respectively), appeared on the Spanish podcast "A Coffee With Nintendo".

On the show, the pair confirmed that their work on the new game is completed, with both then sheepishly admitting that they aren't sure if that information is supposed to have been divulged.

But it wasn't meant to be. According to GameXplain, the interview with the voice actors was mistranslated, with both merely joking about the secretive nature of the game. Neither is able to confirm or deny that they are returning for a Breath of the Wild sequel.

When Is The Breath Of The Wild 2 Release Date?

The short answer is that we are unsure. Nintendo has yet to announce a release date or even a year for it - it wouldn't be out of the impossible to believe it will be coming in 2020 as the game will be a direct sequel set in the same environment as the first Breath of the Wild.

With that in mind, the base for the game is very much there and would simply need to be updated and the story implemented.

Breath of the Wild took 6 years to develop and if you've played the game you can understand why because of the sheer mass of content in it. It's a very similar scenario to when Majora's Mask released, a game that was heavily influenced by Ocarina of Time, meaning it only needed 2 years to release.

Without a confirmed date, it leaves Nintendo the opportunity to extend the development time depending on how much they want to revamp and innovate in this sequel.

It's been reported that the game has started development because there were so many ideas for the first Breath of the Wild but they could not be fit into the game and wanted to give it a second instalment to do so.

When you think about it, why couldn't they have just released more DLC? Games have lived for years with regular DLC updates and yet a game that isn't 2.5 years old has had limited amounts to go with it.

What Do We Know About Breath Of The Wild 2?

  • According to Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, there were plans for more DLC in Breath of the Wild. "Initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas," says Anouma. "But then we had a lot of ideas and we said, 'This is too many ideas, let’s just make one new game and start from scratch.'"
  • Breath of the Wild 2 will be "Darker" and likely to feature the main antagonist Ganondorf being resurrected.
  • It's likely we will see the return of the Twili and the Twilight realm. These are the shadow people descended from Hylians who tried to take the power of the Triforce for themselves as seen by the hand wrapped in twisting shapes.
  • We may see the return of Zant, who featured in Twilight Princess, serving under Ganondorf. Reddit user ReroFunk found that if you reverse the trailer audio, there are certain notes that echo the music played during your final encounter with Zant. He may have been defeated in Twilight Princess, but he is adamant he'll return through the power of his "god".
  • Demise, the demon king, may also return - demise was the final boss in Skyward Sword and the original form of Ganondorf. Once again, Reddit user ReroFunk pointed out that this screenshot in the trailer looks a lot like Demise but could just be a depiction of history.

DEMISE: The fall of Hyrule?

  • Something that can really shake the series up and has certainly been a popular theory from many is that Zelda will be a playable character. This incarnation of Zelda certainly seems like someone that wants to involve herself in the action alongside Link and could become an interesting ally in the story.
  • The team developing the game have been inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, meaning we may well see a lot of mechanics from this game that inspires Breath of the Wild 2.

Price

Most outlets have put the game up for £59.99, as this was how much the original game sold for.

Pre-Order

As it stands, there are limited pre-order opportunities and currently, no-one is offering any real bonuses.

Features And Changes

It's likely that Breath of the Wild 2 will be very similar to its original, so there will be a lot of similar mechanics included.

Even though Breath of the Wild is a fantastic game, it wasn't without flaws.

  • New Areas And Environments
  • Improved Main Dungeons
  • Changing The Shrine Puzzles
  • Weapon Durability Options
  • Zelda As A Playable Character

As well, YouTuber Tyler McVicker talked about some unconfirmed information earlier this year, and alluded to the notion that Nintendo could take inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Characters go about their routines, wildlife roams the wilderness and seemingly unscripted events can have unexpected outcomes wherever you are on the map. These are all aspects that we could see from Nintendo down the line!

Theories

Ganondorf May Not Be The Main Antagonist

In Nintendo’s E3 2019 teaser trailer for BotW 2 it was teased that Ganondorf will be returning from the dead.

In a since-deleted post, a Redditor stated that they believe Ganondorf will not be the villain of the game.

The noted the following:

"Apparently, the game takes place directly after the original BotW as we expected, and as we assumed, it is going to show Link and Zelda rebuilding Hyrule while also dealing with a new threat (He didn’t say much other than that it isn’t Ganon directly)."

Potential Characters

While the cast of characters for Breath of The Wild 2 is unknown as of now, we can assure you there will be an ample amount of old and new faces.

Here are some we suspect could be involved with the game!

  • Fi - The goddess Hylia created the Goddess Sword and Fi, an intelligent humanoid spirit who resides in the Sword.
  • Demise - Demise is perceived to be the original Ganon or at least have a connection to him. Reddit user ReroFunk pointed that a screenshot in the trailer looks a lot like Demise, but could just be a depiction of history.
  • Zant - There is a solid chance we will be heading to theTwilight Realm once again and encountering an old foe in Zant. Reddit user ReroFunk found that if you reverse the trailer audio, there are certain notes that echo the music played during your final encounter with Zant.
  • Midna - If we're revisiting the Twilight Realm, we would have to have Midna play her part in the battle against Zant and other evil forces.
