Apex Legends Season 3: Crypto New Character Release Date

Apex Legends Season 3 New Character, Crypto, and everything we know about the new Legend.

For months, it has long been speculated that we’ll see CRYPTO, a hacking specialist, land in Kings Canyon playable in Respawn Entertainment's hit battle royale title, Apex Legends

We’ve been aware of Crypto’s existence since March when ten leaked images surfaced on Twitter revealing characters that were and are being developed. The credibility of these images were confirmed with the release of Octane, the legend that came with Season One and then Wattson in Season Two.

When Season Two was close to release, a distinctive laptop appeared on the edge of a cliff in Kings Canyon. Players speculated it was owned by Crypto and would function in a similar way to the jump pads that released prior to Octane’s release in that it would showcase an ability for a new character. So far this hasn’t been the case however Apex Legends leaker That1MiningGuy has said Crypto will have an ability that will hack into objects using laptops scattered around the map, much like Pathfinder's "Insider Knowledge" passive.

In the Battle Charge trailer that announced Season Two’s release, an enigmatic character (presumed to be Crypto) used the laptop to hack into the arena’s infrastructure and disabled the technology that kept the wildlife far away from causing havoc on an already violent island.

Crypto is largely presumed to be an expert hacker. A data miner from the channel, The Gaming Merchant, came across an audio file labeled “Char_11” and went through his thoughts on what it could be. “Crypto’s ultimate sounds, to me at least, exactly like some kind of electrical device,” the data miner said. “It sounds like it’s a timer that, after a short period, detonates. My guess is it’s an EMP grenade. You throw it, a detonation timer sounds… and then it explodes.” With recent leaks from @That1MiningGuy however, it's highly likely we're looking at a drone that emits an EMP. Here's a list of Crypto's abilities according to the game files:

Tactical: Aerial Drone - Surveillance camera drone, lasts for 40 seconds, 200 meter range. Can be destroyed. Can hack doors, loot bins and pick up banners with drone.

Passive: Neuro Link - Crypto and teammates see what surveillance drone detect up to 30 meters away.

Ultimate: Weapon Drone EMP - Charge up an EMP blast from your drone. Deals shield damage, slows enemys and disables all traps.

My initial thought could be a 'silence' or disable effect for Legend's abilities. Seeing as how every Legend use some form of technology to activate their abilities from Wraith’s portals to Mirage’s clones, an EMP drone could be devastating to those who rely heavily on their abilities. This could have proven to be a bit too much though.

At the start of August, a developer working on Apex Legends shared an image on Twitter of her wearing a MOCAP suit and carrying a cane with the caption “Working on Apex Legends stuff”. One of the people who responded asked if it’s in anyway related to Crypto and she merely responded with a mouthless emoji.

What is Apex Legends?

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale from Respawn Entertainment, the creators of “Titanfall”. The game launched on February 4th 2019 and had one million concurrent players over a period of 72 hours and reaching 50 million players in less than 30 days. In comparison, one of its main competitors “Fortnite” took about 100 days to reach 45 million players.
