With the Fortnite World Cup Finals set to kick off this weekend, how did we end up here?

The Fortnite World Cup Finals is set to kick off this weekend, and up until this past weekend, it featured the largest prize pool of any esports tournament ever. With a massive $30 million prize pool that was recently passed by Dota 2's The International 9, which surpassed this figure due to its immense crowdfunding, the Fortnite World Cup still remains in a class of its own.

With 100 participants in solos and 50 duos all vying for the glamorous $3 million first-place prize and the prestigious title of the best in the world, the pressure and excitement for the Fortnite World Cup is starting to ramp up. We'll also have the chance to watch the Fortnite World Cup Celebrity Pro-Am. Before the battle bus launches for the first game of the Fortnite World Cup Finals, we wanted to take everyone back and reflect on how we got to this point throughout the qualifiers and who we will be seeing this coming weekend in New York City.

Week 1 and 2

The inaugural week of the Online Open Qualifiers saw many of the favorites from Europe qualify right off the bat. With notables such as Benjy "Benjyfishy" Fish strike fear into his opposition during week one it was a sign of relief for many professional players. In North America, we saw some household names such a Noah "Vivid" Wright breakthrough and qualify and some other establish duos also qualify.

The first two weeks was the first time these professional players all across the world got to test out what they have been aiming at for months now, the pressure was definitely at an all-time high for the players and let us not forget a lot of these qualified players and 14-16.

Throughout the first Sunday Tfue was not playing his best but somehow still amassed 40 points which netted him a top 100 finish. But during this Sunday it was Tfue’s time to shine, capped off by a 12 elimination victory that propelled him in the standings Turner finished atop NAE in week three with 69 points and officially qualifying for the Fortnite World Cup

Weeks 7 and 8

Weeks seven and eight were the second to last qualifier weekends for the Fortnite World Cup Finals with many hopeful professional players running out of time to qualify for New York City many were relieved during these weeks to finally secure their ticket this coming weekend. Notable North America East player Malachi “Reverse2k” Greiner who is also know for his Summer Skirmish victories as well as duoing with Tyler "Ninja" Blevins. Going into Sunday’s finals, Reverse2K placed in or around the top one hundred in previous solo qualifiers but never quite found his footing, throughout the day Reverse2K looked poised to take home a qualification spot. With a one kill victory early on, he carried this momentum into further games. Captivating a nine elimination victory followed up by a seven elimination victory all but solidified his ticket to New York.

Week eight which was the duos portion of the two weeks also stirred up some controversay with how Epic Games is running their competitve scene. Damion “XXiF” C was previously banned after he qualified for solos in week three of the qualifiers after an investigation by Epic Games found sufficient evidence to support the claims of him teaming in multiple matches.

Weeks 9 and 10

The concluding weeks of the Fortnite World Cup Online Open saw the redemption of one of the most famous and reknown Fortnite players of all time in Kyle "Mongraal" Jackson. Facing immense pressure, the final solo week was Mongraal’s redemption. Finishing at 63 points which netted him a comfortable fifth place finish, he ultimately secured his double qualification for the Fornite World Cup Finals

During the solo portion of the concluding weeks, familar names prevailed while others had their hopes and aspirations crushed as they were out of chances. Vinny “Vinny1x” Gilgan and his partner Anthony “ZexRow” Colandro have risen to become two household names in North American competitive Fortnite. Representing TSM, the duo has been known for their aggressive style of gameplay which was formed off of ZexRow’s mindset.  After Vinny1x claimed the solo title at the ESL Katowice Royal earlier this year, the duo mustered a fourth-place finish solidifying themselves as a powerhouse duo to look out for.
