The Coaltion, developer of the Gears of War franchise, recently announced the end of loot boxes and the season pass in their new title which comes out on September 10th.
Laid out in detail on the Gears website, the developers stated their “goal is to create a player-first experience when it comes to in-game content” and alongside the removal of gear packs and season passes, DLC maps will be free for matchmaking and private play, all store purchases will be direct with no RNG and all new exclusive content will be earnable through the new 'Tour of Duty' system.
What Is 'Tour of Duty'?
Tour of Duty is a progression system ran in a seasonal format. Every season will see players take part in daily challenges in order to rank up and earn unique rewards such as character skins. There will be no premium pay-only content for Tour of Duty and the path to each piece of content earnable is clear so you will know what is needed to earn the specific piece you want.
You’re also rewarded with supply drops, whereby every minute you play (across every multiplayer mode) contributes to receiving a random item drop from it’s own pool of content. Supply drops cannot be purchased using real-world money, you’re going to have to work for it!
Gears 5 won’t be completely devoid of purchasable content - exclusive customisation content will be available to buy using a premium in-game currency called Iron which in turn can be bought using real world currency.
“We are committed to ensuring we preserve a fair competitive environment across our modes, so there will be no items in the store that provide a competitive advantage for real money purchasers, i.e. no pay to win”
You will also be able to purchase Boosts. While not required, it will double experience points gained in multiplayer, escape and horde as well as double supply drop progression over a period of real world time.
This is welcome news for those looking to buy Gears of War 5, especially considering Gears 4 sold a season pass for £40, however the vagueness of information regarding Boosts is some cause for concern to those in the community. We can only wait for more details to come out prior to release.
