After four years of near-silence, we finally got a Shin Megami Tensei 5 release date and trailer during Nintendo's E3 2021 presentation.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 combines elements of SMT 3 and SMT 4 and is the first brand-new release in the series in almost 10 years.

SMT 5 pre-orders open June 21, and while Atlus hasn't indicated what the U.S. editions might be, the Japanese trailer offers some hints at what we can expect.

Much of SMT 5 looks similar to its predecessors, though Nintendo and Atlus showed very little during the E3 2021 Treehouse Live segment showcasing the game.

What Is Shin Megami Tensei 5?

Shin Megami Tensei is essentially "what if Pokemon, but demons and existential philosophy." You can check out more about the series in our SMT 3 remaster review, but the series usually involves alternate dimensions and world-changing decisions split between moral paths such as chaos and law.

SMT 5 takes place in an alternate Tokyo ravaged by war between angels and demons. You, a high-school student, are transported there and fuse with a mysterious being, taking on the power to control demons.

The Treehouse Live segment showed the game over screen where your soul fuses with a mystical tree, so something to do with a tree of life motif seems pretty certain based on that.

It features turn-based combat system where exploiting enemy weaknesses gives you extra turns, and your enemies can do the same. For the first time in the series, you can also see enemies roaming the world map.

The series' trademark negotiation system also returns, where you can attempt to persuade demons to either join you or give you items.
