lSquare Enix has confirmed that NEO The World Ends With You didn't meet their early sales expectations. Despite strong reviews - we gave it top marks back upon release back in July - that's unsurprisingly cast doubt upon the series future.
As seen on Square Enix's first half results briefing released this month, director Yosuke Matsuda confirmed that the game didn't hit sales expectations, stating:
While “NEO: The World Ends with You” was well received by users, it has underperformed our initial expectations.
NEO: The World Ends With You NEO Didn't Meet Expectations, Square Enix Confirms
It's not a reflection of their critical success, though, as both The World Ends With You entries were successful in this regard. The original game was critically acclaimed for its fresh story and touchscreen based gameplay on Nintendo DS. Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance for the Nintendo 3DS was also a success, which saw major TWEWY characters helping Sora.
For now, we'll have to see if NEO: The World Ends With You gains momentum in the coming months, so hopefully this isn't the end for the series. That's available now for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC.
