To be able to build your own tools and furniture in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you are going to need to take some time to collect materials or resources. One of the most common materials in the game are the three different types of wood. It can be a bit tricky to find them at first which is why we're going to show you how to get Hardwood.
How To Get Hardwood
To get Hardwood you will need an Axe. If you want to get materials but preserve the tree then use a Flimsy Axe. If you want to take the tree down at the same time, then you can use any other type of Axe at your disposal. Hardwood can be gained from any type of tree on your island, even fruit trees.
To get Hardwood you need to equip your Axe and walk up to your chosen tree. When you are standing near the tree, press A to swing the Axe. If it collides with the tree then a piece of material should pop out. Keep swinging the Axe until the materials stop appearing or until the tree comes down.
You can tell which material is Hardwood as it will be the darkest material that falls from the tree. If you're not sure about this, then you can always walk up to the material and your character should have a thought bubble appear above their head. This will identify what the material is.
What Is Hardwood?
Hardwood is a type of material that you can get from chopping at a tree. It's used in a lot of recipes for tools and furniture. The chances of you finding this material will vary from day to day, so when you do find some we advise that you put it in storage even if you don't need it at that exact moment.
There are many materials and resources for you to collect in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you're looking for more materials then we have a guide on how to get Iron Nuggets (another important resource). Also, we have a guide that shows you how to make a Shovel and how to get the Golden Shovel.
