Age of Empires 4 had a successful opening weekend, with over 70,000 concurrent players on Steam. That saw World's Edge's grand strategy game take the number 1 spot of this week's top 20 games on Steam.
VG247 reports that Age of Empires 4 peaked at 73,928 on November 1, which exceeded games like Phasmophobia, Back 4 Blood - and on Halloween weekend at that - and New World. The number is roughly double the concurrent player base for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition when it released in 2019.
Of course, that's just what Steam records. AoE 4 also released on Xbox Game Pass for PC, so it's likely the total concurrent player count is much higher.

Age of Empires fans have had to wait long enough for a new entry in the series. Age of Empires 3 released in 2005, making that a 16-year span with no new mainline Age games outside some remasters.
