Returnal Developer Received Several Big Offers Before Sony Acquisition

When speaking to Yle, CEO Ilari Kuittinen revealed that those attempting to acquire the Finnish studio were the:

“Usual suspects: big players in the sector from China, Sweden and the US. I have to say that we have had a very special spring and the fact that we were being competed for even feels a little surreal”.

When asked what attracted the developer to Sony, Kuittinen stated:

“It was clear from our discussions that Sony wanted to buy us because we were doing something that other people weren’t doing. Their starting point has not been that we would start making games according to a formula defined by Sony.”

It is no surprise Housemarque will be acquired by Playstation, due to the developer’s history of producing games exclusive to Playstation systems from Resogun, Nex Machina and their most recent PS5 exclusive, Returnal, which released earlier this year.

Ahead of the acquisition, Housemarque has just released a new patch for Returnal, Update 1.4.1 detailing a variety of bug and trophy fixes.
