PS5 Was the US’ Best-selling Console in September, Ending Switch’s 33 Month Run

Sony's heading into the new generation strong, with the PS5 becoming the fastest-selling console in the company's history. After reaching 9 million global sales in January, PS5's now reached another landmark.

As confirmed by the NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, PS5 just ended the Nintendo Switch's 33-month reign to become the US' best-selling console for September. Switch had dominated the top spot since November 2018, continuing to do so nearly 3 years later. However, last month saw the Nintendo console being dethroned.

Many speculate that Switch supply was reduced as Nintendo prepared for the OLED Model's launch, letting PS5 take the number one spot. Whether the PS5 will retain the top spot against the OLED version remains to be seen.

Piscatella also highlighted that PS5 is the highest-grossing console of the year in terms of dollars, though the Switch leads in terms of units across the US.

Despite a global chip shortage, the PS5 also became the fastest-selling PlayStation console in the UK, besting the PS4. While these records continue to be broken, supply constraints experienced by the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are likely to continue until 2023.
