The Modern Warfare 2 gunfight mode makes its long-awaited return to Call of Duty which is great news if you're a fan of some high-octane, close-quarters action. The mode made its debut in 2019's Modern Warfare and despite appearing in recent titles, they've failed to capture the same magic. Hopefully, that can change in Modern Warfare 2's take on the mode.

Arriving as part of the Season 3 update, Gunfight pits two teams of two on small-scale maps with the goal of scoring rounds. The first team to reach the specified number of round wins, is declared the overall victor. Alongside Gunfight, you can get your hands on the BlackCell bundle alongside the Cronen Squall battle rifle and an all-new Battle Pass packed with plenty of content to unlock.

What is Modern Warfare 2 Gunfight?

As mentioned above, Gunfight is a small team-based mode where duos battle it out in a bid to be crowned the winner. The first team to reach six rounds by eliminating the other team or by capturing the objective flag wins the game.

Although it sounds rather straightforward, Gunfight requires plenty of awareness and coordination to achieve success so make sure you're familiar with your duo and can communicate with them effectively.

Modern Warfare 2 Gunfight maps

When Gunfight launches on April 12, you'll have a pool of four maps to compete on. Let's take a closer look.

  • Shipment
  • Exhibit
  • Blacksite
  • Alley

As some of the maps are parts of existing multiplayer maps and Warzone 2's Al Mazrah battleground, expect more additions to arrive in future updates.

Is Gunfight OSP coming to Modern Warfare 2?

Yes, it is! If standard Gunfight isn't enough, Infinity Ward plans on introducing the Gunfight OSP mode as part of the mid-season update. It'll arrive through the weekly playlist updates meaning there's a chance you can vote for this particular variation when the option arises.

OSP stands for On-Site Procurement, which means you'll have to grab various weapons and equipment during the match rather than starting it with a random loadout. If you can master the maps and reach the best weapons quickly, you're bound to gain the advantage.

Modern Warfare 2 Gunfight tips

If you've never played a Gunfight match before or are looking for some pointers before returning to action, we've got three surefire ways you'll head to the winner's circle every single time.

Communication is key

By communicating using a microphone or the ping system, you can provide useful intel to your teammates during a round. Don't forget to call out when you've got visuals on a target.

Master all weapons

Thanks to the randomly generated loadouts, you'll use all kinds of weapons during a Gunfight match. Not comfortable with marksman rifles? Drop into multiplayer for some useful pre-game practice.

Learn the maps

The Gunfight maps are much smaller than the usual 6v6 offerings meaning you can gain a huge advantage by mastering all of the available routes and sightlines on offer. Found a cheeky headglitch from one side of the map to the other? Make the most of it!
