  • Hollywood is still going hard on video game adaptations

Nintendo’s upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie will not be the same fun-filled CGI spectacle we saw with Illumination’s Mario flick. Instead, expect a more serious tone, similar to Netflix’s take on The Witcher.

Nintendo’s Zelda movie is still in its conception phase, but the new film has been announced as a live-action take on the series instead of an animated adventure.

In an interview with Dexerto, director Wes Ball explained that the tone of the upcoming film isn’t officially decided on yet. However, the film will be made “by fans for fans”.

“I will say that Legend of Zelda is very, very important to me,” the director explained. “It was a huge thing for me growing up, playing those games, and the tone of it. I would expect it’s going to be made by a fan for fans.”

“Where that tone goes, we’ll see,” they continued. “But I really hope that, you know, we’ll make something that everyone’s hoping that it will be.”

After the success of films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Hollywood is going all-in on video game films and TV. We’ve already seen shows like Halo release to mixed results as well as the brilliant Fallout series and HBO’s The Last of Us.

In an interview with Gfinityesports, Captain America and Twisted Metal actor Anthony Mackie, explained that Hollywood’s new focus comes amid a new generation of executives that have grown up with gaming.

“It’s a different generation now,” Mackie told us. “I think if you look at gaming and gaming systems now, it’s much more interactive. And Twisted Metal, as a dad, I can watch this with my son and be like: ‘This is the sh*t that we used to play, this is the sh*t that we used to do.”

In the near future, more video game adaptations are set to release including Eli Roth’s surprisingly good-looking Borderlands film, a new Tomb Raider movie and new seasons of Fallout and The Last of Us.
