1. Path of Exile
Platforms:
The most impressive thing about Path of Exile is that it’s somehow free. This game came out all the way back in 2013, but you’d be silly to believe that means it’s outdated. This action RPG is constantly being updated with more content, and the sheer volume of stuff to do in it is staggering.
Path of Exile also follows the seasonal play loop, but it’s more established due to being so long-running. If you want a granular way to create your builds, and a game that plays like Diablo, then Path of Exile is it. Again, it’s also free.
2. Nioh 2

Nioh 2 is basically a high-speed Diablo-like Soulslike. Don’t question why only one of those has a hyphen; the English language is a very strange thing. Nioh 2 takes elements of the Soulslike genre, namely dying a lot and the checkpoint system, and combines it with a blisteringly fast pace, a more level-focused progression system, and just so much loot.
There are multiple weapon classes, each of which has its own style and talents, and each of which also has three stances to use and master. You can then add on ninjutsu and magic, summoning cool Yokai to help you out, and the ability to turn into one yourself. Plus, the co-op mode is exquisite.
3. Minecraft Legends
Platforms:
Minecraft Legends is far from the most complex ARPG, but it’s still good fun, and it’s also the best game like Diablo for younger gamers or family settings. Set in the world of Minecraft, meaning you get the cutesy graphics and characters, Minecraft Legends has some cool ideas to keep combat interesting like item-based special attacks.
The co-op is the star here, and playing this through with friends isn’t going to challenge you, but it’s still good fun. There’s also just a staggering amount of DLC if you end up really enjoying the game, which means there’s plenty of time to spend in this wonderful little world.
4. Warhammer: Vermintide 2
Platforms:
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a co-op melee action game that also has some guns, some magic, and a lot of rats. Based heavily on the Left 4 Dead style of gameplay, Vermintide 2 adds a lot to that genre by not only taking on a cooler setting, because zombies are played out and we all know it, but also with loads of loot.
We’re not talking just slightly different submachine guns; we’re talking switching between bows, Gatling guns, flamethrowers, and more. There are also a variety of awesome boss fights to take part in, characters gain new class options as they go, and there’s basically endless gameplay here for those willing to dedicate time to it.
5. Warframe
Platforms:
Warframe is another free-to-play game that’s just incredible to play. Massive new updates have been launched regularly since the original release of the game, and it’s gone from being a sci-fi corridor action game to one that has you roaming around open worlds, flying around in space, and even taking on whole new stories with different characters entirely.
There’s an immense amount of stuff to do, but the core of the game is finding a Warframe you love and grinding up everything you need to turn it into an unstoppable force. The range of weapons is great; blocking bullets with a sword never gets old, and the fluidity of the movement is second to none.
6. Darksiders Genesis
Platforms:
Darksiders Genesis is a little more compact than many of the other best games like Diablo, but it’s no less enjoyable. This twist on the Darksiders series turns it into a twin-stick shooter of sorts, with players taking control of War and Strife as they have to hunt down Lucifer.
Both characters have their own skills and specialities, and you can also tweak their builds as you like. While playing it solo is fun, this game shines in co-op, and the constant quips, awesome boss battles, and the gameplay itself all help this ascend into a more heavenly realm than the demons you’ll be blasting to shreds would have you believe.
7. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Platforms:
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is the latest game in the Borderlands universe, and it’s one of the most fun too. Rather than shooting your way through whatever universe-ending disaster is looming next, this game tells the tale of Tiny Tina’s tabletop role-playing game with some friends. The meta-narrative is actually pretty funny here, but naturally, the gameplay is great too.
The new setting allows for some interesting tweaks to the systems, including having magic instead of grenades, but there are still countless absurd weapons to collect as well. The classes can also be mixed and matched for more diverse build options, and the world you’re journeying through does away with a traditional overworld in favour of a cute tabletop setup. It’s just a great game, and definitely one of the best games like Diablo in recent years.
