Despite Microsoft now owning Activision Blizzard, it seems that the company won’t be doing any special Diablo 4 crossover cosmetics with the Xbox brand. This means that fans hoping to see Master Chief from Halo hacking down demons with his energy sword are out of luck, at least for now.
Brent Gibson, the associate director of Activision Blizzard’s hack-and-slash RPG, was asked about bringing in special Xbox crossover cosmetics by GamesRadar. It seems that Gibson isn’t a huge fan of the idea, at least not yet, as the folks working on this game still want to keep that melancholy tone.
"We're very careful in making sure that these things feel right," Gibson said. "The team is passionate about keeping the dark tone, making sure that things stay appropriate – avoiding french fry swords."
It’s a shame that we won’t get to see any special Xbox cosmetics for Diablo 4 anytime soon since Master Chief would have been a fun inclusion. Sure, it wouldn’t “make sense” but sometimes fans just want to have fun with these crossovers. After all, Master Chief has appeared in Fall Guys, Fortnite, and Rocket League, just to name a few.
Xbox does own some other fantasy IP, though we don’t know if they would “make sense” with what Gibson said. Fable could work, but that series doesn’t have too many notable standouts gamers would like to play as.
The only time Activision Blizzard did special crossover cosmetics was when Diablo 3 was announced for Nintendo Switch. Fans could get a Ganondorf cosmetic that’s based on his general appearances in games, like Ocarina of Time. Ganondorf and the lore of Zelda does kind of work within the realm of Diablo, though that doesn’t mean Master Chief shouldn’t be in it.
Even if we don’t get any significant Xbox crossovers with Diablo 4, the action RPG has seemingly recovered its momentum. Season 1, despite having some neat bosses, lost a lot of fans due to some nerfs and a couple of bugs. Activision Blizzard hopes that Season 2 does better and they’ve also announced its first expansion.
